Why Your Voice is Your Most Underrated Business Tool
When people talk about building a business, they often focus on strategy, systems, or social media hacks. And while all of those things matter, there’s one tool that gets overlooked time and time again - your voice.
Not just the words you say, but how you say them. Your tone, energy, pace and presence.
Your voice isn’t just a means of communication - it’s a magnet for connection, credibility, and confidence. And the great news is, you own it, you don’t have to pay for it, and you can use it whenever you like.
So, how do you feel about using your voice?
I posed this question to the attendees of my recent ‘Your Voice, Your Superpower’ workshop and it was greeted by a wave of honesty:
“I don’t like the sound of my own voice.”
“Why would anyone want to hear from me?”
“I’m not actually clear on what I’m saying.”
These responses weren’t surprising - but they were powerful. Because they revealed the real reason so many brilliant women hold back from showing up in the media or even sharing their message online.
It’s not a lack of expertise, it’s not a lack of passion.
It’s a disconnect from their most underrated business tool - their voice.
Why your Voice Matters in Business
It’s representative of your brand
Whether you’re showing up on Instagram Stories, hosting a podcast, or sharing your origin story in an interview, your voice is the thread that connects your audience to your values, your expertise, and your mission. Your story and your message are unique, and your voice is how the world gets to hear them.
It builds trust and connection
People like to buy from people like them and your voice helps build an emotional connection. When you speak with warmth, clarity, and authenticity, you create instant trust. And in a world of AI and polished content, an actual real voice is what will cut through the noise.
It attracts opportunities
Podcast interviews, speaking gigs, media features - these don’t just come to people with a big following. They come to people who show up and speak up. When your voice is clear and consistent, you become the go-to expert in your space
3 Ways to start using your voice with intention
So how do you start using your voice in a way that feels natural, not forced?
Here are three simple shifts to try:
Speak like you’re having a conversation.
When engaging with your audience, speak like you are talking to just one person. You want to think of using your voice as having a natural conversation, not giving a formal presentation. Bring your natural energy and presence into your delivery.
Practice pace and pauses.
When we feel anxious about sharing our voice, we often speak too quickly. What happens then is your message gets lost. Instead, slow down, breathe, and use pauses to let your words land. It instantly increases your authority and gives your audience time to take in what you’re saying.
Share your message regularly
Get comfortable using your voice - even when no one’s asking to hear it. Taking that first step builds confidence over time, so when the bigger opportunities come along, they feel less daunting. And remember: your audience isn’t judging you - they’re hoping you’ll inspire or motivate them.
I waited for far too long to use my voice, not realising the power it contained. If you don’t feel ready to use it, take this as your nudge that you are. You don’t need to wait until the ‘perfect’ moment, as this will never come. Just start using it, and you might be surprised at how quickly people start to really listen.
